A+ Product – Must Have If You Use SD/MicroSD cards, June 21, 2011

Intro:
- 20+ year laptop user. Consultant, travel ’round the US to client locations.
- Checked this product on both laptops and desktops running Windows XP/32 bit operating systems.
- I have a Fujitsu P1610 laptop with a built-in SD card reader. I use 4,8, and 32gb SD cards in this machine. 3+ yr old model, fastest file transfer rates are 3mb/sec through usb cable.
- Bought this product to allow me to download files to the SD card on my Fujitsu and them move them to storage drives without having to wait for slow USB transfer.

Analysis:
1. Folks, this is a great value and a must-have if you use SD/microSD cards. Getting 10-12mb/sec transfer from SD cards using this reader/writer (I think of it as an adapter) in my laptops and desktops using USB2.0 transfer to external hard drives for permanent storage.

2. Construction is solid. Well made, looks like something that would cost $20+.
Same size as a standard 4-8GB USB drive.

3. Operation. Easy and fast. Just slide the SD card into the slot in the side, insert it into a USB drive, and your on your way. No instructions to read.

Summary:
5star product. Surprisingly cheap (mine was $5.99 from Amazon) , very well made. Easy to justify having one in your drawer to use at home or on the go.

This little guy is convienient, smaller than many thumbdrives, and about 50% faster than my laptop’s internal card reader. 16MB/s read instead of 11 reading the same file off the same card (A 16GB SDHC from Transcend). Wish I could have found it in a not-ugly color. Packaging claims that it supports SDXC, but I can’t test that. I hope it will be ready if and when I get an SDXC card.

[...]

We purchased this IOGEAR SD/MicroSD/MMC Card Reader/Writer GFR204SD back in February. Initially it worked out well. It worked as it was supposed to. Now, less than 6 months from the time we bought it, it quit working. It has not been dropped, or abused in anyway, and has only been used by adults. It will not read anything, and only says it needs formatting. My husband is a computer tech, and used this to keep his programs on. He can still access them if he puts the memory card into a computer, but this USB reader will not work. I know it wasn’t very expensive, but you would expect it to last 6 months, at least . I probably won’t buy from the maker of the reader again. The company that i purchased it from on Amazon, OnSale, sent it out promptly, and did what they were supposed to do. The product just isn’t good.
